01PRINCIPLES

Core Principles

Rope rescue is made safe by margin and redundancy, not by equipment performance. Confirm these principles first on every call.

Redundancy

Two-rope system

Rig the main and belay lines to separate anchors so the load cannot fall if one fails. Two-tensioned systems that share the load between both lines are now widely used.

余裕Margin

Safety factor

The breaking strength of the weakest component divided by the maximum load. Account for knot loss, edges and shock loads.

単純化Simplicity

KISS

Choose the simplest system that everyone on scene can understand and check. Complex rigging adds setup time and missed checks.

Risk

Risk versus benefit

Take calculated risks for patients who may survive. Do not put rescuers at risk for body recovery.

点検Check

Whole-system check

Before loading, a rescuer other than the rigger checks every connection from anchor to patient by pointing and calling.

Edges

Edge protection

Place edge protection wherever rope touches an edge. A loaded rope can be cut instantly on a sharp edge.

Anchor angle and force on each leg

2脚の内角Angle between legs各脚の荷重(荷重100%に対し)Force per leg (% of load)評価Rating
On a highline, the tighter the rope, the wider the angle and the faster anchor forces climb. Leaving some sag protects anchors and equipment.
02KNOTS

結索Knots

Knots reduce rope strength. Efficiency figures are approximate and vary with diameter, material and dressing.

Notes
03ANCHORS

Anchors

The anchor determines the strength of the system. Choose something you can call bombproof; if you cannot, combine several.

Single point

One large structural member

RC columns, fire apparatus, large live trees, primary steel members. Wrap with a round sling and pad the corners.

分散Distributing

Load-distributing (self-equalizing)

Shares load evenly even as direction shifts. Tie limiter knots because the system extends if one point fails.

分担Sharing

Load-sharing (pre-tied)

Leg lengths are fixed, so extension is small if one point fails. Best when the load direction is known.

連結Back-tie

Back-tie

Tie a doubtful front anchor back to a separate anchor behind it. Common with rooftop railings.

04MECHANICAL ADVANTAGE

Mechanical Advantage Systems

Raises use mechanical advantage. Actual MA depends heavily on pulley efficiency; substituting carabiners drops efficiency to around 50%.

05EQUIPMENT

器材Equipment

Select equipment by what it does, the load it will see, and the standard it meets. Strength figures are typical values; always check the markings on the product you use.

Retirement: remove from service, record and destroy any hardware that took a major shock load, software degraded by chemicals, heat or UV, and rope with sheath damage or core irregularities. Keep a usage log for every item.

06METHOD SELECTION

Choosing the Rescue Method

Consider non-rope options first. If stairs, ground ladders or an aerial can do it, that is fastest and safest. Use rope when other means are not available, and narrow the method by conditions.

09INTEGRATION

Integrating Other Equipment

Rope rescue rarely stands alone. It works best combined with apparatus and other rescue tools.
